First Harvest of 2010!

You ready for it? Are you sure?!? Here you go:

Approximately 4 oz of arugula from thinning the huge pot I just threw some seeds in about a month ago. Yes, I probably waited too long to do the thinning but it still tastes great if maybe a bit leggy. I probably need to throw some more in another pot (garden is still part of a construction zone).

The not harvested, but growing report: I've also got a ridiculous amount of sage. It was this small little plant that is now this huge bush! I have no idea what to do with it all except maybe give it to unsuspecting friends. A little sage goes a long way and one can only eat so many Sage Shortbread cookies. Also? My chives are freaking rockstars. As is, unfortunately, my lemon balm. Anyone want some? It went from this little plant in a 3" pot to practically a bush in less than 12 months. And, finally, my greek mountain oregano. I had hope of it surviving the winter, but when the snow melted it looked so....so....dead. Turns out, it was totally just sleeping! My 2 scrawny plants are getting bigger by the day. *sniff* They grow up so fast!

The kohlrabi and kale I started AGES ago are seriously puny still. I don't really understand why...it's been almost 2 months and they still only have 1 set of true leaves. I think I'm going to write them off as a failure this spring and try again in the fall (probably give them an earlier start then). The carrots I planted at the same time as the arugula look lovely (I thinned them out too but they haven't really developed big roots yet) unlike my failed attempt in the fall.

My strawberries, as far as I can see, look OK but they are also part of the construction zone and they may or may not have dirt piled on top of them. Or slugs eating all the berries. We shall see. I am seriously contemplating throwing down $30 for a good sized blueberry bush (well, $60 b/c I'd buy two). Somebody talk me down!!!

  1. You get no help from me. I say go for it with the blueberry bushes! And the rule is no planting until Mother's Day around here. So I'm impatiently waiting to throw my stuff in the dirt. Whee!

  2. Interesting on the sage. Mine looks terrible and I can't figure out why. Maybe because my strawberries are trying to run it over...they're space hogs!

  3. Oh man, I only just sowed carrots a couple weeks ago, I didn't know you could sow them as early as arugula. Good to know for next year!

  4. graduallygreener: technically, you're not supposed to. But I figured, I had a metric ton of seeds (bought lots last year & didn't use) and had nothing to lose. I mean, if they didn't work out, I could still plant "on time". Plus, I sowed the arugula a bit late.

Honestly, it probably only worked out b/c of the unusually warm weather this year!

  5. I am right there with you on the sage and chives....they are huge already! And I have no idea what to make with the sage so I am thinking to stick it in a big pot on the patio since the leaves are pretty.

  6. WOW! I think I'm going to be disappointed I didn't do more lettuce/greens. Still time to get them in so maybe I'll use this as motivation! I'd LOVE some lemon balm but I don't think I'd ever see you to get it! When did you put your chives in? Mine are up but I don't think they've done anything.

  7. Kat- my chives are from last year. They died back in the winter and then popped up with a vengeance!
